After the discovery of hormones and surgery in the twentieth century, FTMs have the option to live as male without hormones or surgery or to transition to male with male hormones and surgery after gender counseling. National groups such as FTM International provide social support for FTMs in many cities. Conventions such as TransUnity (Los Angeles) provide networking and seminars for FTMs. Magazines, newspapers, books, radio, television, films and the internet provide information for FTMs on transition.

Many cities have local FTM organizations. FTM Alliance of Los Angeles co-sponsors the major national conference TransUnity every year in Los Angeles, California. This summer convention hosts prominent FTM speakers, authors, performers and organizations.

Today's FTM community provides leadership opportunities for FTM service to others promoting community building, bridging identities and honoring diverse FTM communities. Dragonsani "Drago" Renteria is a Deaf Chicano/Italian FTM who is CEO of DeafVision, Inc. Drago served as Director of San Francisco's Deaf GL Center (1992-1995). In 1991, he published the first magazine by, for and about the Deaf LGBT Community. In 1995 he founded the national Deaf Q Resource Center. In 1994, he founded the National Deaf Q Archives.

Alexander John "Bear" Goodrum October 3, 1960 - September 28, 2002 was the Director of TGNet Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. As an African-American FTM bi disabled person, he had more than 20 years experience in community building. He was a member of the City of Tucson GLBT Commission.
